Building Confidence and Capability: Val’s Story as a Graduate Consultant

Val’s journey at JNC highlights the transition from learning the fundamentals to applying them in real client environments. Since joining the graduate program, she has developed her analytical and problem-solving skills while working across a variety of industries and challenges. We spoke with Val about her experience so far, what has surprised her most, and how she has grown in confidence as a consultant.

What is your role at JNC and what does a typical day look like?

I wasn’t actively looking for a new role at the time, but when I came across the opportunity at JNC, it really stood out. I was particularly drawn to the potential for growth and the chance to build expertise in a specialized area like software licensing.

The role also offered the opportunity to work closely with clients while developing both technical and consulting skills, which made it an exciting step in my career.

What has surprised you most since you started?

What has surprised me most is how dynamic the licensing space is. There is always something new to work on, and the landscape is constantly evolving, which means there are always new things to learn.

I’ve also really enjoyed working with clients across a wide range of industries, each with different challenges and requirements. It keeps the role engaging and ensures no two days are the same.

What has been the biggest learning curve?

The biggest learning curve for me was transitioning from training into working on real client projects. Applying what I had learned in training to real world situations was both challenging and rewarding, and it helped me build confidence in my role.

Is there a project, task, or moment you are particularly proud of already?

One of the moments I’m most proud of so far has been transitioning from training into contributing to real projects and seeing the impact of my work. It’s been a great opportunity to apply what I’ve learned and continue developing my skills.

What skills have you developed the most since joining the graduate program?

Since joining the graduate program, I’ve developed strong analytical and strategic thinking skills, particularly when working with complex information and client requirements. I’ve also gained experience in problem-solving, collaborating with colleagues, and supporting client engagements, which has helped me grow both technically and professionally.

What advice would you give to a new graduate?

I would encourage new graduates to stay curious and be open to learning as much as possible. There is a lot to take in during the first few weeks, so asking questions and engaging with colleagues really helps.

Being proactive and open to support will help you grow into the role more quickly.

How do you switch off after work?

Outside of work, I like to spend time with friends and family and focus on activities that help me recharge. Whether that is staying active, exploring new places, or simply taking time to relax, it helps me reset after a busy week.
